Her self-titled debut studio album was released on 2 June, 2017. The album spawned seven singles, including two UK top-10 singles "Be the One" and "IDGAF" and the UK number-one single "New Rules", which also reached number six in the United States. In February 2018, Lipa won two Brit Awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.
In April 2018, the single "One Kiss" by Lipa and Calvin Harris reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. In February 2019, at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, Lipa won Best New Artist and Best Dance Recording for the single "Electricity", a collaboration with British-American duo Silk City.Dua Lipa was born on 22 August 1995 in Westminster, London, to Albanian parents. Her father, Dukagjin Lipa, is a marketing manager who had a side gig as a lead vocalist in a Kosovar rock band named Oda and her mother, Anesa Lipa (née Rexha), is a tourism executive. Her parents are from Kosovo and had left Pristina in 1992. Anesa was born to a Kosovan father and a Bosnian mother while Dukagjin is the son of a historian, Seit Lipa, who was the head of the Kosovo Institute of History between the years of 1990-1995. In Kosovo her father was training to be a dentist and her mother to be a lawyer. Their flight to London threw that over, and for a long time Lipa's parents worked as waiters in cafes and bars. In the evenings, her father took business courses while her mother retrained in travel and tourism. Lipa has two younger siblings, a sister named Rina and a brother named Gjin. She attended Sylvia Young Theatre School part-time before moving to Kosovo with her family in 2006 when her father had graduated from his studies and been offered a job in Kosovo; there she attended the private school Mileniumi i Tretë in Pristina. Lipa grew up listening to her father. Her first name means "love" in Albanian, which was her grandmother's suggestion. Lipa explained "Now I’m proud of it. Now I am. But when I was growing up all I wanted was to be called Hannah, Sarah, Ella… anything normal. Because with Dua you had to explain: I’m from Kosovo."
At the age of 14, she began posting covers of her favourite songs by artists such as Pink and Nelly Furtado on YouTube. At the age of 15, she moved back to London with aspirations of becoming a singer. Lipa lived with a friend and studied at Parliament Hill School, where she finished A-levels in Politics, Psychology, English and Media, returning to the Sylvia Young Theatre School on Saturdays. Lipa began working as a model for the online catalogue ASOS Marketplace when she was 16 and 17. She also worked as a hostess at a Mexican restaurant La Bodega Negra in Soho, and at a nightclub in Mayfair. In 2013, she starred in a television advertisement for The X Factor.
